Mobile Crane Safety 29 CFR 1910.180

General Background:

Serious injury or death can be the result of improper use, or use of cranes having defective or poorly maintained components. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that most of these types of accidents can be prevented if proper safety precautions at job sites are initiated. This poses a serious problem for exposed workers and their employer. The OSHA Crane safety standards establish uniform requirements to ensure that the hazards associated with the use of cranes in U.S. workplaces are evaluated, safety procedures implemented, and that the proper hazard information is transmitted to all affected workers.

The following course outline is designed to make new crane operators aware of hazards that affect the safe operation of the crane.
  1. Introduction to Mobile Cranes
    1. Work area inspection.
    2. Personnel experience.
  2. Overview of OSHA’s Mobile Crane Regulation
