DOT Training

For transportation firms both large and small, DOT training of employees and related hazardous materials transportation safety procedures help these organizations pass the United States Department of Transportation’s audit, enabling them to be fully compliant with the regulation that is intended for the industry they operate in. The United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) was established by an Act of Congress and first started operations in 1967. It aims to serve the country by ensuring safe, fast, efficient, accessible and convenient transportation systems, and it has sought to do this by putting in place a variety of legislations in the form of Acts, through the years. A large number of governmental transportation divisions fall under the US DOT. Departments of Transportation (DOT) exist for each State individually. Hence, for organizations operating in the transportation industry, compliance with all DOT regulation is a must. This can be achieved by DOT trainings at various safety, health and environmental training centers throughout the country.     The Center for Safety and Environmental Management, Inc. is based in Pennsylvania and conducts trainings in Safety and Environmental regulations that are in place due to OSHA, MSHA, DOT and EPA regulations. The Center for Safety and Environmental Management, Inc. is affiliated with Slippery Rock University and offers a wide range of courses that cover each aspect of every safety, health and environmental management regulation in place in the United States. A number of courses are offered under the head of each regulation with a variety of courses on DOT training as well. There are three DOT training courses available at the Center for Safety and Environmental Management, Inc. These include barricades training, DOT outline and general awareness (this also serves as a DOT refresher course), and training for following guidelines of the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act. The DOT training on barricades is both informative and interesting (barricades on roads have different placement criteria).     DOT instructions for Flagman and roadside construction crews are also included in this course. DOT OUTLINE General Awareness / Refresher is the second course offered under the DOT training stream at CSEM. Employers whose employees work with hazardous materials (these are defined in Sections 49 CFR 171 and 172) are required to train their hazmat employees. This DOT training course includes a historical review of regulations, review of applicable standards (DOT, EPA, OSHA), and definitions, fines and penalties associated with DOT non-compliance. Hazmat employees are those who work in packaging; review paperwork for shipping; load, unload and trucks; and receive hazardous materials. Hazmat employees are also required by Federal regulations to receive DOT training on the requirements of hazardous materials. These include identification, classification, labeling, marking, and packaging etc. of the defined hazardous materials. The third course offered by CSEM under DOT training is on the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act, which spells out standard operating procedures for hauling hazardous materials. This DOT training course provides trainees with a history of the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act and related progression of related laws.
